Het langste gedeelte van deze relatief korte route van 27 km loopt door een beschermd bos van gekweekte eiken, uniek op Kreta.

.Het begint vanaf Rethymno, gaat door het dorp Gallou, waar de universiteitscampus ligt, en een beetje verder het gerestaureerde klooster van Peter en Paul.Geschreven getuigenissen over de geschiedenis van het klooster bestaan niet, terwijl tradities overvloedig zijn. Het is een heilig deel van het klooster Arkadi.

Dan gaat de weg verder naar het zuiden, door het kleine dorpje Somatas.Dit dorp staat in een volkstelling uit de 16e eeuw. Tijdens de Ottomaanse overheersing werd het dorp bewoond door veel Turkse Aga. In Somatas is de kerk van Saint George, van Renaissance architectuur.De route eindigt op het Late Minoïsche Begraafplaats van Armeni (12e eeuw v.Chr.), dat is de grootste begraafplaats van gesneden grafstenen op Kreta.

.De route van hier loopt westwaarts naar het dorp Kastellos, met een prachtig uitzicht op de berg Vrissinas, en bereikt de Old National Road, die door pittoreske dorpen, zoals Agios Andreas, Gonia, enPrines, allemaal ideaal voor een verfrissende stop van hun kleine traditionele cafés.Het laatste is een dorp met veel Venetiaanse en Ottomaanse elementen in zijn architectuur. (10de 11de eeuw).

.Last is Atsipopoulo, een aantrekkelijk groot dorp met sterke Venetiaanse architectonische elementen, van waar de weg afdaalt terug naar Rethymno.

Oak Forest

The longest section of this relatively short route of 27 km passes through a protected forest of cultivated oaks, unique throughout Crete.

It begins from Rethymno, passes through the village of Gallou, where the University campus is located, and a little bit further the restored Monastery of Peter and Paul. Written testimonies about the history of the Monastery do not exist, while traditions abound. It is a sacred part of Arkadi Monastery.

Then the road continues south, passing through the small village of Somatas. This village is listed in a 16th-century census. During Ottoman domination, the village was inhabited by many Turkish Aga. At Somatas is the church of Saint George, of Renaissance architecture. The route ends at the Late Minoan Cemetery of Armeni (12th-century BC), which is the largest cemetery of carved tombstones in Crete.

The route from here continues westwards to the village of Kastellos, with a beautiful view of mount Vrissinas, and reaches the Old National Road, which passes through picturesque villages, like Agios Andreas, Gonia, and Prines, all of them ideal for a refreshing stop to their small traditional cafes. The last is a village with many Venetian and Ottoman elements in its architecture. (10th – 11th century).

Last is Atsipopoulo, an attractive large village exhibiting strong Venetian architectural elements, from where the road descends back to Rethymno.
