Adele-Maroulas-Agia Paraskevi-Platanias

This is both a cultural route and one for nature lovers, which can be accomplished on foot. Agios Dimitrios church is a church dating to the 11th century with an integrated cross and a cupola. A plethora of wall paintings has been preserved.
It is distinguished by the small sections in the space between the beams of the cross as well as by the pillars, which support the dome. Maroulas is a beautiful traditional village with many Venetian mansions.

The village is facing the sea at an altitude of 150 meters and it is located about 9km southeast of Rethymno. Due to its high position facing the sea and its narrow lanes, where there is no main square, is Maroulas a typical example of how fortifications were built at that time.
The village is surrounded by greenery and many olive groves can be found there. The visitor can see remains of ancient tombstones, two Venetian towers, a Byzantine church dedicated to the Ascension, a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and a small chapel at the small village square. Moreover, one can stroll in the narrow alleys taking pictures of the old doors, the door knobs, and the stone mosaics, meet with the locals, and enjoy his meal or beverage at the village taverns and cafés. Nichteridospilios cave (buts cave) or Spiliara- loc: Marouliano Plai, nort-west of Maroulas.

It begins from Adele, a quiet village with its central settlement dating to the Venetian era. Among the sights you should see are the church of Agios Panteleimon and the house of Konstantinos Yamboudakis, the hero who blew up the Arkadi monastery as a sacrifice during the Ottoman holocaust during the revolution of 1866.
After Adele, the route runs towards Agios Dimitrios with the beautiful Byzantine church of the same name (14th century) that offers some interesting iconography.
Then the route ascends towards AgiaTriada or Santa Trinita accentuating the Venetian influence.
In the center of the village is the Venetian church of Santa Trinita.
The route continues then uphill to Maroulas with its Venetian houses and towers.

The village is a real-time machine that can transport you in the Medieval, Venetian, and Ottoman ages. The locals are the best guides for the place since they can narrate many true stories or based on myths, that no one else knows. From there the road descends towards Platanias, famous for its beach which hosts the annual nests of the protected sea turtle Caretta Caretta, with a wonderful view of Rethymno.

Estimated duration: 4 hours
Distance: 20 km

Adele is a quiet village with its central settlement dating to the Venetian era. The "fortress-like" architecture, according to some scholars, is testified by two "passages" in the square of the church of Agios Panteleimonas, that may have formed its medieval gates.
