How Rethymno Celebrated World Tourism Day 2026
This year, the global theme for World Tourism Day was "Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism." While Rethymno is actively looking toward the future, we believe that the true heart of travel cannot be replaced by technology. The magic of our city lies in human connection, authentic hospitality, and the lifelong friendships we build with our visitors.
To celebrate World Tourism Day 2026, the Municipality of Rethymno and the Rethymno Hoteliers Association organized a multi-day festival dedicated to our beloved "repeaters"—the loyal travelers who return to our city year after year. From traditional feasts to a very special eco-friendly gesture, here is how we celebrated our global family.
Saturday, September 26
The Rhythm of Tradition in Platanias
The weekend kicked off with a vibrant celebration in Platanias. On Saturday evening, locals and visitors gathered to feel the true rhythm of Crete. The air was filled with the sounds of live traditional Cretan music, and guests were treated to a rich buffet of authentic local cuisine. It was a joyful, energetic start to the weekend, proving that music and good food are the best ways to bring cultures together.
Sunday September 27th
Sunday evening was the emotional peak of the celebration. Originally planned for the Municipal Garden, a sudden autumn rain shower gave us the chance to move the event indoors to the beautiful, historic House of Culture in the Old Town.
The rain did not stop the celebration! In a warm and packed hall, we hosted the "Friendship" Awards Ceremony to officially honor our "repeaters". These visitors are not just tourists; they are our friends, and recognizing their love for Rethymno was a deeply moving experience.
The night was paired with local fine wines and a delicious Cretan buffet. The audience was mesmerized by a live musical performance from Alma echoes and spectacular traditional dances by the Lyceum of Greek Women of Rethymno.

A Green Legacy in the Municipal Garden
The celebration did not stop with music and awards. We wanted to honor these deep connections in a truly meaningful and sustainable way.
Following the weekend's events, we invited our honored "repeaters" to the lush Municipal Garden for a special tree-planting ceremony. Working side-by-side with local officials, our guests grabbed shovels and planted young saplings throughout the garden.
Each newly planted tree was carefully tagged with a "Friendship Sign" plaque bearing the name of the visitor who planted it. The plaque reads: "May this tree grow as a living symbol of your deep bond and lifelong friendship with the city of Rethymno."
This beautiful action perfectly aligns with our "Rethymno 2040" vision for a greener, climate-neutral city. By planting trees, we are beautifying our historic garden while taking a practical step toward environmental protection.
