Shaping the Rethymno of Tomorrow

Where ancient history meets modern vision. Discover how a new generation of architects is reshaping the coastal fronts, public spaces, and historic monuments of Crete’s most beautifully preserved city.

When you walk through the narrow, cobblestone alleys of Rethymno's Old Town, you are walking through a living museum. Every Venetian doorway, every Ottoman balcony, and every ancient stone wall tells a story of the civilizations that have shaped this land over thousands of years.

But Rethymno is not a city stuck in the past; it is a vibrant, evolving community that constantly looks to the future.

To celebrate this balance between preserving our heritage and adapting to modern needs, the Municipality of Rethymno has proudly launched a brand-new cultural institution: "Architecture Afternoons" (Απογεύματα Αρχιτεκτονικής) . Taking place right now at the House of Culture (Spiti tou Politismou) in the heart of the Old Town, this week-long festival uses architecture as a starting point for an open dialogue about the future of our beloved city.

13 Visions for the Rethymno of Tomorrow

Initiated on World Architecture Day (October 5th) by the Deputy Mayor of Culture, Manos Tsakonas , the festival brings architecture out of the academic world and into the public eye. As Mr. Tsakonas proudly noted, Rethymno is likely the first city in Greece to dedicate an entire week to celebrating architecture, placing it alongside music, theater, and the fine arts in our cultural calendar.

The centerpiece of the festival is a fascinating exhibition featuring 13 architectural diploma theses created by the talented young minds of the School of Architecture at the Technical University of Crete .

Curated by university professors Marianthi Liapi, Nikos Skoutelis, and Alexios Tzompanakis , the exhibition features highly detailed 3D models and creative blueprints. Rather than letting these brilliant student ideas stay hidden in "academic drawers," the city has put them on display.

Each project focuses exclusively on Rethymno and its surrounding areas. Visitors can explore visionary proposals for redesigning the coastal front around the Fortezza, upgrading public squares, and creating flexible cultural spaces. It is a unique opportunity to view a "map" of the Rethymno that could exist.

Upcoming Highlights - Be Part of the Conversation

As the festival continues this week, locals and international visitors are invited to attend two major open discussions that will directly impact the city's cultural landscape

Unveiling the New Archaeological Museum of Rethymno

 Saturday, October 10, 2026

For years, the priceless ceramics, statues, and historical finds of our region have needed a larger, more modern home. This Saturday, the Association of Architects of Rethymno will host the lead designers of the New Archaeological Museum of Rethymno , architects Giannis Kizis and Panagiotis Grammatopoulos . They will publicly present the highly anticipated architectural study for the new museum, followed by a roundtable discussion on how this modern structure will honor the ancient treasures within.

Breathing New Life into the Fortezza

Monday, October 12, 2026

The festival will close with a stunning presentation by architect Stelios Stefanakis .

He will present a detailed proposal for the restoration and reuse of the Ottoman Ravelin (a historic defensive structure) located at the iconic Fortezza Fortress.

This presentation will explore how we can respectfully transform ancient military monuments into vibrant cultural spaces for the modern public.

Plan Your Visit & Explore City Routes

Whether you are a design enthusiast, a history lover, or simply a visitor wanting to understand the true spirit of Rethymno, the "Architecture Afternoons" exhibition is an experience you shouldn't miss.

To make the absolute most of your day, we highly recommend pairing your visit to the exhibition with a self-guided walking tour through the Old Town. Follow the beautiful City Routes , which perfectly captures the architectural evolution of Rethymno, guiding you past iconic Venetian portals, historic minarets, and traditional mansions before ending near the House of Culture.

Rethymno has always been a city defined by its builders—from the ancient Minoan potters to the Venetian engineers and Ottoman craftsmen. Today, it is our turn to shape its next chapter.

The "Architecture Afternoons" festival proves that historic preservation and modern innovation can be partners in building a living, breathing, and sustainable city.
