As part of our ambitious " Rethymno 2040 " roadmap, we are hosting two major events to celebrate World Bicycle Day (June 3) and World Environment Day (June 5).
These initiatives are more than just celebrations; they are practical steps toward our goal of becoming a climate-neutral, zero-carbon destination. We invite residents and visitors to join us as we explore the "Island We Would Like" through green energy, biodiversity protection, and sustainable mobility.
June 3: Pedaling Toward a Zero-Carbon Future
To celebrate World Bicycle Day , the Municipality of Rethymno, bike friendly destination , is focusing on sustainable mobility .
In our journey toward 2040, reducing carbon emissions from transport is a top priority.
What better way to show this than a high-tech, low-impact journey through Rethymno's countryside?
Free Guided E-Bike Tour
On Wednesday, June 3, we are offering twelve lucky visitors a free guided excursion on state-of-the-art electric bikes. This 22km journey is designed to showcase how modern technology can help us explore our cultural and natural wealth without harming the environment.
The Route: Starting at Unknown Soldier Square, the group will head to the historic Panagia Halevi , through the lush Mili Gorge , and up to the traditional villages of Chromonastiri and Roussospiti , before concluding at the serene Agia Irini Monastery .
The Impact: By using E-bikes, we highlight Rethymno’s commitment to "Green Wheels." This action supports our work in the CO2 PACMAN project , exploring how green energy transitions can be both practical and beautiful.
How to Join: Spots are extremely limited (12 people total). Register

Protecting the "Cretan Miracle" of Life
Just two days later, the focus shifts from our hills to our shores for World Environment Day .
Our beach is not just for swimming; it is the third most important nesting site in Greece for the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtle.
The Event: An Evening of Awareness on the Beach
From 18:30 to 20:30 , Rethymno Beach will become a hub of environmental action. In collaboration with the 2nd Experimental Kindergarten of Rethymno and ARCHELON , we are hosting an evening titled: “When a light goes out, a life begins to bloom.”
Art & Action: Watch as a local artist constructs a sea turtles using sea rocks collected by children on the shore. This demonstrates the "Circular Economy"—creating beauty from the earth while leaving no waste behind.
Youth Leadership: Our youngest "Climate Ambassadors" from the kindergarten will perform songs and theater, teaching us that even small citizens can lead the way to 2040.
The Science of Light: We will participate in a symbolic action to learn about light pollution. By dimming our lights, we ensure that baby turtles can find their way to the sea—a vital part of protecting our local biodiversity.
Guided Discovery: ARCHELON volunteers will lead free Beach Walks (separate groups for kids and adults), offering a rare look at how we identify and protect the nests hidden beneath the sand.
