A Powerful Partnership
City, University, and Community
On April 28 and 29, 2026 , the Municipality of Rethymno proudly hosts a major European event titled "Designing a Climate-Neutral City - Rethymno 2040." Part of the European Interreg Euro MED CO2 PACMAN project, this three-day initiative explores how Mediterranean islands can transition to a zero-carbon econom y.
Partnership between City, University, and Community
What makes this initiative truly special is the open dialogue between all levels of our society. The transition to a sustainable future cannot be achieved by governments alone.
This event highlights the strong partnership between the Municipality of Rethymno and the Technical University of Crete , who have joined forces to bring academic research into everyday city planning. Most importantly, the core of this project is the local community . Through open discussions, local authorities, academic experts, business owners, and citizens are sitting at the same table to co-design the "Island We Would Like."
Special emphasis is given on our youth. The students of Rethymno are actively participating as "Climate Ambassadors," presenting their own fresh ideas and projects to shape the city they will inherit.
The "Island I Would Like" Lab: Turning Ideas into Action
A major highlight of the event is the upcoming "Island I Would Like Lab." This collaborative workspace is designed to strengthen the connection between European project partners and local stakeholders.
The main goal of the Lab is to move beyond theory by translating research insights and co-created ideas into concrete, locally grounded actions . To ensure Rethymno’s sustainable transition, the Lab will tackle practical strategies in key everyday sectors, including:
☀️ Renewable energy and energy storage
🚲 Sustainable and green mobility
♻️ Waste and water management
🍅 Sustainable food systems
📉 Low-carbon business activities
🌳 Ecosystem-based approaches
Through interactive sessions and co-creation workshops, participants will work together to develop practical solutions that not only reduce carbon emissions but also strengthen the resilience of Rethymno’s local economy and natural environment.
Interactive Experiences
The event featured a variety of engaging activities for everyone—from policy-makers to local families and visitors:
Virtual Reality (VR) Experiences: Put on a VR headset and visually explore different scenarios for Crete's green energy transition.
Interactive Apps: Test out the CO2 PACMAN tools to calculate the island's ecological footprint and create your own "climate recipe."
Youth Think Tank Exhibition: Discover amazing projects created by the students of Rethymno’s Experimental High Schools, displayed throughout the event.
Sustainable Tourism & Innovation: Expert roundtables discussing how local businesses, the tourism sector, and the circular economy can adapt and thrive.
We are actively designing a green and climate-neutral city for 2040, and the most important part of this journey is you!
